What’s new at 2-1-1? Planning Ahead

WhatsNewBacktoSchoolParents, do you remember last summer… school year rapidly approaching, long lines to get school supplies, last minute appointments for immunizations? We wanted to help smooth out the process by letting you know when back to school programs will be happening so you can space things out this summer to help reduce Back to School stress!

Proof of Address:

When: ASAP.
Where: 512 SE Third St Ocala, FL 34471

Is your child going to attend a new school or just starting school? Make sure you have all of the documents needed to demonstrate residency. If the utilities/lease/mortgage are NOT in the parents name, you will need an affidavit from the “Head of Household”, the person who’s name *is* on the bills and lease/mortgage. If it’s hard to get information from that person, start trying now. For more information, visit the Marion County Public Schools website.

Immunizations:

When: ASAP.
Where: 1801 SE 32nd Ave Ocala, FL 34471

You can get your child’s immunizations already! According to the Marion County Department of Health: “The Florida Department of Health in Marion County is urging parents to beat the rush and schedule school immunizations now. Immunizations are free for people ages 18 and younger and no appointment is needed at the Department’s Ocala office. The immunization clinic is open weekdays from 8 a.m.–4:15 p.m.”

For the complete list of immunization requirements visit the Florida DOH website. In case you miss getting it done through the DOH, check out the next event below.

FREE School Supplies, School Physical, Food, Health Screenings and FUN!

When: Saturday, August 10, 2013 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Ed Croskey Center 1510 N.W. 4th St. Ocala, FL 34475

FREE: Immunizations (Must Bring Current Shot Record), School Physicals, Vision and Hearing Screenings, Child ID’s, Backpacks and School Supplies (while supplies last), Vendors, Clowns, Games and Free Food.

Back Again This Year: Munroe Regional Kid Fitness Screenings and Kids Sight, a screening for Amblyopia (lazy eye) for children ages 1 to 6.

Children’s Clothes:

When: Year Round
Where: Throughout Marion: Call 2-1-1 for location near you.

There are programs in Marion County which have clothing closets with children’s clothes. You can call 2-1-1 to find a location close to you to make sure your child has the clothes they need for school. If you can afford to pay a little bit for your child’s clothing, you can also call 2-1-1 to find a thrift store near you. Children can grow significantly over the summer, so it’s best to wait until you are closer to school starting on this one.

Glasses:

When: Year Round
Where: 435 NW 2nd St Ocala, FL 34475

Does your child need glasses, but you can’t afford them? Talk to a guidance counselor or nurse at your child’s school for a referral to an agency who can assist you with the cost of getting glasses for your child. According to one source: Almost 80% of what a child learns in school comes to him visually. Impaired vision can affect a child’s development by limiting both the information he is exposed to and his range of experiences. Buying all the right school books and supplies is useless without the most important learning tool of all: healthy eyesight.” So, once your child gets a vision screening at the Back to School Bash or at school talk to your school guidance counselor or nurse who can help you get glasses for your child.
